Devendra Barnhart Does Phoenix September 28, 2009

Phoenix the band, that is. DevendraBanhart

For me, the verdict is still out on Devendra Barnhart. I know the critics fell all over themselves praising  his 2007 release Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon, and I appreciate his exploration into different cultures through that album, but I’m just not totally sold on the hippy-commune music he is peddling. And I also don’t know how I feel about this “freak folk” genre he is supposedly leading.   What I do think  is that he is  nothing short of amazing on this cover of one of my favorite songs from Phoenix’s recent release Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.

Banhart said:
